emily.
The girl behind the counter seemed friendly enough. She knew about what she did anyway, books. I didn't read much myself, but I had read a book or two last month. I was more involved with music. The guy that I was getting this book actually played guitar and worked with me at the record store down the block. I had walked past this book store everyday for almost six months but never come in. Now maybe I would. She handed the book back to me and I slid it into my back pocket. I tore the top of the gum wrapper off and pulled out the yellow rectangle with my teeth. Her fingers slid across the numbers of the register. Strands of her ironed hair hung down in front of her face. Black for the most part, lime green dusted on top. Interesting.
"Your total is $18.47. If you would have come yesterday that book would have been half off," she took the twenty off the counter. The spot where it had been was cracked. It looked like someone had scratched something into the surface. No doubt a profession of love to someone who was no longer important to the one who had done the scratching in the first place. When she handed me the hand written receipt I noticed a tattoo across the back of her hand. Passion. Ha, I like this girl already.
"So I am sure that i will be seeing you around. I like this place. You should come and check out the record store I work at. It's just down the block from here. Whenever you get a break or something." I took a pen from the chipped cup that was on the counter. Along the side it declared that the owner was in love with a rainbow. The pen happened to be filled with pink colored ink. I wrote down what the store was called and my phone number. "If you're ever really bored or something, give me a call. I know what's going on around here music-wise and I can give you some suggestions."
"I will be sure to do that. I'm almost always here. Next time you come in I can suggest you some other books. Maybe ones that have no need for a cover so the kids don't see them." She smiled and I noticed the lip ring. My nose started to itch, but there was no scratching it with the new piercing gracing my left nostril. She pocketed my receipt as I turned to go. I pushed open the glass door and a bell rang that signaled my entrance. Well that wasn't that bad at all.

it's a new start.
I saw her when she came into the store. She had bright orange hair, natural with a hint of something more, rusty colored. That's why I noticed. Normally the people that came in here had black hair with a bright color thrown in, if there was any bright color. She knew what she wanted too. Most people looked around and lingered over a few books before choosing their next project. "Confessions of a Young Wife." Not the type of book people normally know that they want, but that is just my experience. She walked right up to me with it in her hand and put it on the faded green counter in front of me. Her bangs nearly covered both of her eyes and her lips were painted a red almost as bright as the orange of her hair.
"Will this be all for you today?" Her hand went into her pocket and pulled out a small leather wallet. From this came a twenty dollar bill.
"Yes this is all that I want. Actually, do you have any gum? My breath reaks of dead cow covered in onions and garlic," she looked my in the eye and then down around the register.
"I have it behind the counter. Kids keep coming in and stealing it. We're a little short staffed." In fact, right at that moment I was the only one working the entire store. Not that it was that large of a place, just a little shop in the village. Not much different from some of the other shops, except we let people stay to read.
"Well I'll take Juicy Fruit if you have it." I handed her pack of it and then took the book from the counter.
"This is quite a book. I've read it once. Not much of a storyline, not much dialogue. I'm sure you know what it is though." She smiled at me, like I was some kind of child that had asked her for a boost to the water fountain.
"Oh I am familiar with what it is yes. I told my friend that I would find him a special surprise. He doesn't much like to read, but I think that this might change his mind a little," she winked. I liked her.

NEW STORY IDEA
okay. so i am going to brain storm a little about a new story that i want to write.
characters;
emily- 22, female, works at a record store
lyn- 21, works at a bookstore, writer
aiden- 24, local musician, works at the record store
travis- 24, works at the bookstore
so i am thinking it will just drag on until whatever. i don't know, maybe emily and aiden and travis will start a band and lyn will write the songs they play and manage and such.
that is about the only idea i have so far.
any suggestions?
